Majhi Women: An Introduction
Background: The Majhi, one of the Indigenous /aboriginal peoples of Nepal, reside near rivers, ponds. They have their own distinct culture, language, custom, religion, and recognition. According to aged Majhi people, since we Majhi people have been earning our lives living near rivers since antiquity, we have intimate relationship with rivers.
Occupation: The traditional occupation of these Majhi people is rowing boats and fishing. In addition to this, they are engaged in farming as well. Majhi women sell jand and marcha. Nowadays, Majhi women of Terai belt sell mats of pater. Jand,marcha and mats prepared by them are considered of high quality and famous.
Physique: So far as physique is concerned, Majhi people are a bit black in colour, medium in height. Their hands and arms seem to be strong. Outwardly looking, they look like mangols.
Costume: The Majhi women wear short gunyu, black blouse, patuka at waist, majetro of white cloth at head. Apart from these, they use thokka of silver at wrist, haari of company rupee, hasuli of silver at throat. Married Majhi women use black pote and unmarried women use green pote.
Education: The majority Majhi women are compelled to lead their lives towards darkness as they lack education. The main reason behind this is poverty. Lack of awareness is also equally responsible for this. As per survey carried out by Majhi Women’s Development Association of Nepal, 3 ladies completed Proficiency Certificate level, and 70 ladies completed their S.L.C. whereas their total population is 38200 according to census of 2058 B.S. No any Majhi woman is in public service.
