National Indigenous Women Federation [NIWF]
Introduction:
National Indigenous Women Federation is a national level non-government, non-profit organization of the indigenous/ethnic women in Nepal. It was established in 1990 [2047 B.S.] as a result of the surge of nationalities movement with a firm conviction that the indigenous rights movement must be closely associated with the needs, hopes, aspirations and at the initiative of the grass root peoples themselves. The main objective of the National Indigenous Women Federation is to ensure the rights of indigenous women for equal access to national resources, opportunities, education, health and self-development of the concerned communities by making them aware of their contribution in national development works.
Nepal is a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, multi-religious and multi-racial country and the Constitution of Nepal has guaranteed the rights of indigenous nationalities, their cultures, languages, religion as well as other minority rights. In other words, the Constitution has made special provision to promote living standard of the minorities, backward nationalities and the community belonging to any ethnic groups. This is why the NIWF has now initiated nationwide campaign to promote organizational development of the indigenous women in Nepal.
Therefore, the major responsibility of NIWF is to work towards overall development of indigenous women. To make them cope with nation buildings tasks as well as make them aware of development of women in their own communities. Similarly, it is also working closely with the government in implementation and exercise of the plans and programs. NIWF also has the responsibility to explore and keep the society informed of what is happening on issues related to indigenous women international level too.
